In the fall of 2008 Gunnar Karel was assigned to compose the music for the Reykjavik City´s Theater production of Gangverkið, premiered in October, and again did the musical composition for Shakespeare´s “Twelfth Night”, premiered in March 2009, produced by The National Theater of Iceland.
Both productions were co-produced with the Student Theater of The Icelandic Academy of The Arts.
In September the experimental theater piece Homo Absconditus was shown at the international theater festival Lókal in Reykjavík, where Gunnar Karel was the musical director.
Gunnar Karel was one of three finalists in a competition to compose for The Chamber orchestra Ísafold in connection with “Við Djúpið” (Iceland) music festival this summer.
At the “64. Sommerliche Musiktage Hitzacker” (Germany) Gunnar Karel will be one of three Young Composer in residence, as the representative for Northern Europe. He will be commissioned to write a piece for “The Boulanger Trio” which will be premiered at the festival.
A piece written by him was premiered at the “Ung Nordisk Musik” in Göteborg (Sweden), august 2009.
